De Kwacht Food Forest has a very specific terrain to work with, and we at Eetbaar Landschap love that. Fairly acidic soil (pH 5.5), a peat layer 20 cm deep, plenty of water in the lower areas, and a beautiful south-facing location!

That calls for blueberries!

The American blueberry must be thriving here, and that excites me. In the six years I’ve been designing, this is the first time I’ve encountered such a beautiful habitat for blueberries.

That’s why we’ve chosen to create a berry field this year to kickstart this promising project. Eventually, they’ll be picking blackberries, redberries, whiteberries, pinkberries, and blueberries (six varieties), as well as raspberries and blackberries. This way, they can offer a variety of fruit all summer long. So be sure to cycle or stroll past Rolleken in Lille. Soon (read: 2025) there will be a stall or vending machine with summer treats, and who knows, you might even be able to go out into the fields and pick your own.

The food forest will also be planted here in the fall of 2024. We’re already looking forward to it. Below you’ll find a photo report of the project with Jochem van Lammas, Adriaan and Elena from De Kwacht Food Forest, and numerous helping hands. Together we can do anything!
